The Division of Worker’s Compensation in California is responsible for monitoring worker’s compensation claims, assisting in resolving any disputes which may arise, and working towards minimizing the effects workplace injuries have on both employees and employers. One of the duties of the Division of Worker’s Compensation involves suspending any medical providers who may have been found guilty of fraud or other criminal activities, or who have lost their license. When a suspension is in place, the medical provider in question may not a provider or be paid for any treatment, evaluation, or services relating to a worker’s compensation claim.
February Suspensions Bring Total to 197
The most recent list of DWC suspension orders was published on February 20, outlining the details of 20 medical providers who will no longer be allowed to work on worker’s compensation claims once the required 30 days’ notice period has elapsed. February’s additions bring the total number of suspended medical providers in California to 197.
The reasons for which the Division of Worker’s Compensation may suspend a medical provider are as follows:
1) Being convicted of a crime involving:
- Fraud or abuse of the Medi-Cal or Medicare program, the worker’s compensation system, or any patient
- The medical practice as it pertains to patient care
- Financial crimes relating to Medi-Cal, Medicare, or worker’s compensation
- Qualifications, functions, or duties of the provider
2) Suspension from the Medi-Cal or Medicare programs due to fraud or abuse
3) Surrender or removal of the provider’s license, approval, or certificate enabling them to provide healthcare
Full details of current suspensions can be viewed on the DWC website.
