Sofi Stadium Construction Worker Killed

BY: Koszdin | Monday, June 15, 2020.

Every employee faces risks of injury, regardless of what type of job they are engaged in. Whether somebody works in a high-rise office building or as a postal worker, there are injury risks present. Construction workers, though, face more on the job risks than workers in most other industries throughout the country. Recently, an ironworker died while working to construct the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

What happened at SoFi Stadium?

In early June, a construction worker operating at the SoFi Stadium construction site died after a fall. All work at the construction site was halted temporarily, according to those overseeing the $5 billion project. One person familiar with the incident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that the ironworker fell off of the roof while working in the southeast corner of the stadium.

“This is an extremely sad day,” said a spokesperson for Turner-AECOM Hunt. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We work extremely hard to prevent days like this and we have halted all construction activity.”

According to the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, the worker fell 110 feet. The Los Angeles County medical examiner said that the worker was in his early 30s and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. This death comes after a string of controversies regarding the construction of SoFi Stadium. In particular, there have been a number of known COVID-19 cases amongst workers at the stadium. A large crane collapsed had this site in late February, but nobody was injured in that incident.

Construction injuries can be catastrophic

Construction workers operate around dangerous equipment and hazardous situations every day. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), approximately 20% of all workplace fatalities occurred in the construction industry during the latest year of data we have available. Some of the most common causes of workplace injuries and fatalities in the construction industry include:

  • Falls from varying heights
  • Electrocutions
  • Getting caught in between or crushed by objects
  • Defective tools
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Exposure to hazardous materials
  • Inadequate training
  • Inadequate safety equipment
