Mental Illness Is Now The Most Common Workplace Issue

BY: Koszdin | Friday, August 31, 2018.

Mental illness has been more prominent in our day. It still existed back then but more research has been done now. People are becoming more understanding of what it is and how to recognize it. However, it still is stigmatized in our society. When you have a mental illness it can be incredibly tough. It truly impacts your daily life. Many people suffer from mental illness and it affects their job performance. Sometimes your mental health claim may be outright denied as it is harder to prove than physical ailments. You still deserve the have your claim approved. You are not alone in this matter. There are numerous studies on mental illness and its impact on the workplace. Recently, an organization named Friends First has studied this matter. These are the findings they have made and their conclusions from the study.

A recent study was conducted on mental illness in the workplace. The study showed that ⅖ workers suffered from stress and anxiety. Mental illness has taken the top spot for workplace issues and has pushed cancer and back pain to numbers 2 and 3 respectively. The study also found that 50% of millennials stated that they have experienced mental illness. The older population may also have experienced it but do not know the symptoms due to it being more of a taboo during their time.

The study found that half of the people surveyed had taken a week or more off of work due to stress and anxiety. The average sick leave was 14 weeks. One-quarter of these people will not be compensated for their leave from their employer even if the leave time was less than a month.

There is an income gap for those who are unable to work due to mental illness. The length of the average income protection claim is five years. This is incredibly unfair. Most people will have to take less pay for taking time out for their mental illness. Many people are financially unprepared for this. Research proved that mental health impacts all classes no matter the occupation, age, and/or gender of the person. It’s ironic that most people in the study described themselves as “reasonably healthy” or “very healthy”. This could go back to the stigma that mental health still has today.
