If a Work Injury Means You Can’t Go Back to Your Old Job, California Owes You Retraining.

BY: Koszdin | Wednesday, July 15, 2026.

A serious work injury can take more than your health. Sometimes it takes your job, the one you were trained to do, because your body can no longer handle it. When that happens in California, you are not just sent on your way. There is a benefit built for exactly this moment. A lot of injured workers never claim it, because no one told them it exists. It is called the Supplemental Job Displacement Benefit, or the SJDB voucher.

What the voucher actually is

The SJDB voucher is real money set aside to help you train for new work. In many cases it is worth up to 6,000 dollars. It is not a check you spend however you like. It goes toward things that help you build a new career, like tuition at a training program, licensing fees, or tools for the new job. The point is simple. If your injury forced you out of one line of work, this helps you get into another.

When you qualify

The voucher is tied to a specific situation. You generally qualify when two things are true. First, your injury left you with a permanent disability. Second, your employer did not offer you suitable work you can still do, within a set time after your condition stabilized.

In plain terms, the voucher is meant to be yours if two things happen. You cannot go back to your old job. Your employer does not give you a new one that fits your restrictions. It usually comes after your medical condition has settled and your permanent disability is known.

Do not leave it on the table

This is one of the most overlooked benefits in the whole system. The voucher comes with its own paperwork and its own deadlines, and if you miss them, the money can slip away. Insurance companies do not always go out of their way to remind you it is there. So it falls on you, or someone in your corner, to claim it.

If a work injury has changed what you are able to do for a living, the SJDB voucher may be part of what you are owed, alongside your other benefits. Koszdin, Fields & Sherry has helped injured workers across Los Angeles and the Valley claim everything their case allows since 1955. Call 818-781-1503 to find out what you qualify for.
